A few Tips Before Your First Ballet Class

While many have found that learning ballet as a young child has allowed them to retain a few of the basic steps and movements, others should do a bit of research and study before their first ballet class. Ballet is not only a great exercise and dance routine, it's also a cultural experience.

Many of the movements, terms, and steps involved in ballet, require flexibility, precision, determination, as well as strength, and it can be difficult enough to put your body in these positions, without understanding what the instructor is saying. So just as before you start learning any new sport, you'll need to learn the terminology required in most ballet classes.

While learning and familiarizing yourself with the vocabulary may not necessarily improve your actual movements, it can actually make the class a bit easier as you'll understand exactly what they're asking you to do. A bit of online research or even a ballet book can help you familiarize yourself.

You may also want to learn the five basic ballet positions at the barre. These positions will be used over and over again and it involves precise placement of feet, hands, and arms. You may find that you're asked to put your feet in very specific positions such as heels together while toes are spread at least 6 inches apart, knowing these barre positions before your first class can only help you place your feet correctly.

Of course, considering that ballet is heavy on flexibility, stretching becomes very crucial. Begin stretching your body for your first-class, in fact, as soon as you sign up. You'll notice the benefits and you'll also notice a bit of soreness from your beginning stretching exercises. Don't push the stretching exercises, you can injure yourself and it's best to have a professional help you understand exactly how far you can stretch each day.

You'll also want the right ballet slippers, leotard and nylons. Believe it or not your feet are crucial in ballet, and comfort as well as flexibility within the attire that you're wearing is just as important. There's a good chance that when you sign up for your first ballet class, you'll also be given clothing requirements. Many times, ballet schools or classes have a particular dance shop that they'll recommend in order to help you be fitted properly for clothing and attire.

In order to avoid injuries, avoid trying too hard before your first-class to get in shape with the stretching exercises or barre exercises. Injuries can result, and that's why you take ballet dance from an instructor, who knows what they're doing. After all, you'd hate to have to cancel your ballet class, because you tried too hard before it even began.
